Brass instruments get dirty. The
constant passage of warm, wet air through an instrument's bore means
that regular cleaning is a must, else corrosion and rot become
inevitable. If you've just eaten before playing, sugar and food
particles also get inside the horn, creating a sticky, unhealthy
buildup. Over the course of weeks and months, the scum inside a brass
instrument will eat away at the metal like rust on a car.
Traditionally, brass instruments have been cleaned by a
process known as a chemical flush. In this process, the instrument is
dipped in a series of harsh, acidic chemical cleaners until dirt and
grease are removed from the surface and bore. Not only is this process
long and involved, it also does harm to the environment. Fortunately,
the chemical flush
can become a thing of the past.
At Cadenza Music, we have recently acquired an Omegasonics
ultrasonic cleaner. This machine cleans a brass instrument through the
use of ultrasonic sound waves. These waves create tiny bubbles in the
solution, which in combination with non-toxic, biodegradable
detergents, scrub the intrument cleaner than a chemical flush possibly
can. These devices have been used previously in industry to scrub such
hard to clean items as cylinder
heads. They are also used by jewelers to clean fine jewelry, and by
surgeons to clean precision tools. Only recently introduced into the
music industry, Cadenza
Music is proud to offer ultrasonic cleaning for your brass instrument.
